The Saudi Arabia thread
#1
So for those who don't follow world news and politics and all that shit, here's your "WTF is happening with WWE and Saudi Arabia" thread and why recent news is causing a ton of problems.

- WWE made a 10-year deal with Saudi Arabia for some of that sweet, sweet oil money. It's a HUGE deal, with WWE doing multiple shows there every year. It's a LOT of money for WWE, which is why they managed to get Lesnar booked to work the next show and Shawn Michaels to come out of retirement.

- Saudi Arabia is, how shall we put this.......pretty fucked up. They funded 9/11, homosexuality is punishable by death, they're ruled by a brutal regime, and women have almost no rights (which is why no women are on the WWE shows there). But they're sitting on top of the world's biggest supply of oil, so every country, especially the U.S., is all buddy-buddy with them.

- Last week, a man named Jamal Khashoggi went missing. Khashoggi is a journalist who has been very critical of Saudi Arabia. He was in Turkey and went inside the Saudi consulate there last week. And he never came out. It's a big complicated story, but it looks like Saudi Arabia, on orders from the very same Saudi prince who is paying WWE all this money, killed the guy. They knew he was going to be there and they literally sent a 15-man assassination squad there to kill him. Khashoggi went inside the building and it's believed he was tortured and murdered inside by the Saudi hit squad, then dismembered, and probably taken out in different bags and shit and disposed of.

- Needless to say, not a good look for the Saudis and it has turned into a huge news story that is still ongoing right now.

- The problem is, of course, WWE has a show there in 3 weeks.

- Yesterday, several news outlets talked about WWE doing a show there. WWE responded by putting out a statement saying that they are "monitoring the situation." But that's it. Which, in other words means, "We're keeping an eye on it and if the publicity gets too bad, we'll back out of it. But we REALLY don't want to walk away from all that money."

- And now today, several U.S. Senators (including one from Connecticut, where WWE is based) have come out and urged WWE to cancel the event.

https://www.f4wonline.com/wwe-news/senat...ent-267751

- Lindsay Graham is even urging them to back out. It's problematic because the U.S. government is trying to take a tough stance on this issue and Linda McMahon is literally in Trump's cabinet.

- And then there's Kane. He's scheduled to work the main event of the show, but he's also a mayor of a major U.S. county and has to think of his political career.

So yeah...if this story keeps getting bigger, Crown Jewel might end up getting cancelled. Or Kane might pull out. Or something. And then what? Does the PPV still happen in America? Does Shawn still come out of retirement for shitty throwaway PPV without the big ass oil money paycheck?

It is very interesting indeed. My problem with this from a fairness perspective is that no other sanctions have been discussed publically. They are a massive oil supplier and could do a lot to fuck with our economy, I get it. It isn't an apples to apples comparison. But WWE is just dancing for their amusement. The only thing they would be hurting by doing that is their PR and to a minor extent, their moral. So if other companies are still allowed to do business over there, why shouldn't WWE?

Additionally, if wrestlers want to take moral stances, that is fine. But let's not forget that Vince McMahon, CEO of WEE has a laundry list of skeletons in his closet that aren't frequently discussed here: his mother may have taped him, he was physically abused when he was younger, he used to drink and drive, did many underhanded things to eliminate his competition over the years, he may have covered up a murder, he has used and abused steroids, he not only condoned but encouraged illegal use of steroids, his has time and again turned a blind eye to his company's drug policy, contract tampering was a joke to him, he has a long track record of bullying and intimidation, he has been accused by several women of rape, frequently lies and misleads his employees, objectified women to a degree that would never fly today, and so on. I wouldn't put it past Vince to do anything for the right amount of money/power.

I love shit like this whole Saudi/WWF fiasco. The real life business and behind-the-scenes issues in a company like WWE are so much more interesting than what's on TV. It's like that time Raw almost got double-booked out of their arena in Denver a few years ago. It's a shame the scripted show is never even half as interesting as real life.

I hope this PPV gets cancelled, just for the sheer "WTF do they do now?" aspect of it. Just going ahead with the show as planned would be boring now.

Same here. Although even if they do go, I love watching them have to dance around and do certain things like the whores that they are.

Yeah if the show takes place, I'm really curious to see if it will be the full-blown propaganda shit that it was last time.

They should just not air it on the network.

That'd probably be the best idea, but they've spent the last month advertising it. And fans would lose their minds if they couldn't even see Shawn's return match.

Saudi Arabia is preparing to admit that the journalist was killed. Apparently they're going to claim he was accidentally killed in an interrogation gone wrong.

Don't you hate when you send a 15-man hit squad with a bone saw in their luggage to interrogate someone and they accidentally kill and dismember him?

Bro! Bro! Chill out bro! We were just planning to kidnap and torture him. Then he had to be a complete asshole about things and piss off Omar and you know how Omage gets when he's angry. I mean if anything, we're the victims here. Turkey and the left wing media out there trying to make us look bad just because some asshole died in our embassy. That stain will never wash off.

Said this in the Raw thread but it's appropriate here too

So the World Cup tournament is a neat little idea. It's like King Of The Ring, but World Cup because they're overseas. Get it?

It's really pointless though, I mean with both Big Match John and the Legend Killer Randy Orton in there, we all know it's going to come down to them. Why not just skip the whole tournament and give the crowd what they really want, John Cena vs Randy Orton for the first time ever, in Saudi Arabia?

That's funny Rob, because of how it starts out I was reading it in Vince Russo's voice and it was equally funny that way
