#NoKings Tour
So, I searched and didn't find a thread on this. I went and saw Doomtree and F.Stokes on Friday Night with @bitternthensome. First things first, Bitter's a cool dude, despite what the general consensus on this board may be.

Secondly, I thought F.Stokes was actually a pretty goddamn good lyricist. I'm a fan now, which is something that I couldn't say before this show. Dude was using all Lazerbeak beats though, so that could have had something to do with it, but yeah.

Third. Doomtree blew my fucking face off. I love them live, and if I could go see them every night of the week, I would. I have seen them live three times now. (Blowout VI, Soundset 2011, and NoKings tour) and each time it was a different show with a lot of different songs and just, yeah. Fucking awesome. If you have a chance to go see this, even if you aren't sure you like Doomtree, or you are on the fence about them, you should definitely go see this.

Plus they get bonus points for playing this song, which I heard at Soundset and fell in love with:

Cannot wait for that new P.O.S. which he hopes to have "in our hands before summer."

So yeah, TL;DR: Doomtree is the fucking shit, do yourself a favor and go see them if they are ever in your town. MAC did and now I'm pretty sure he's a fan.

Totally worth it...

That sucks, I wish I was going back to MN for Soundset this year, but that is the same weekend as we are going to the beach to spread my girls' brothers ashes and do a memorial ceremony, so it's not happening. Which sucks, since Rask tells me that RSE are going all out on the lineup this year. Frown

They came through my town about three weeks ago and I went. It was mind blowing. Less than 100 people showed up, so they performed the whole show on the floor. They hung around and talked to everyone, so I got to meet them all. Sims was cool as Hell. And Dessa touched me, so no other woman matters to me now.

Yeah, I miss being in Minnesota for a lot of reasons, but high up on that list is the awesome hip hop scene out there, It's honestly like no other place in the country. You could see Atmosphere, any one of Doomtree, Brother Ali, a bunch of RSE guys, basically at least one good hip hop show every couple of weeks, and a lot of them are free... I've seen Dessa like 6 times now counting crew shows. And yeah, she touched me too, and took a pic with me at soundset in 2010, I told my girlfriend that if Dessa comes calling, she'd have to take a back seat, she has agreed to this.

I looked so out of place in that show. A 6'3 bald white guy with a beard amongst a bunch of hipsters. I love me some hipster girls though.

Yeah, I'm not really a big hipster looking guy either, but I love me some Doomtree, so it was worth it.

Cecil Otter kept eyeing me before the show. I assume because I was rocking my Dessa shirt, and was the only person wearing anything Doomtree related. But yeah, I didn't have the guts to say anything till after the show.

It's one of my favorite tees. That's not me by the way......

I'm spoiled when it comes to Doomtree and RSE. Seeing Atmosphere twice this week, and I'll likely end up at the Doomtree show next weekend in Mankato because we'll be down there recording a scratch copy of John's new album.

Hipster girls go to their shows, you say?
That may be enough to get me to go... that and being able to stare at Dessa in person.
My only hope is that she would only sing, and not do that spoken word bibble-babble...

Her spoken word is insane! I wish her and Sage would collab and write a short verse about making babies.

Yeah, I don't really get the "spoken word" shit. She's rapping. She might not be yelling it like Eminem but it's still rap.

RE: #NoKings Tour
Dessa does do spoken word, but I almost never see her do it for the crew shows. On crew shows they typically keep things high energy. Dessa saves the spoken word for solo shows, all you'll likely see on tour are things like Dixons Girl, Dots and Dashes...etc...she'll only be rapping or singing.

RE: #NoKings Tour
To me, a steady low volume drum beat, and somone talking, is spoken word! There's a difference to me. Rap is Gucci Mane and Wakka, Hip-Hop is shit like DT, Atmosphere, and the RSE people...more like poets and actual producers! I know it's dumb to sub categorize things but when I ask people if they got any good hip-hop when i'm riding with, and they throw on Weezy, i'm just like "Uhhhh you got any Kendrick Lamar?" and they're just like "Who?" Weird note, basically ALL the shit i'm into right now, were/are Scribble Jam contestants or winners. Eyedea, Sage Francis, Mac Lethal, Atmosphere(Slug) etc. Those acts alone have made me shy away from alot of rap, even Tech. Just realize how lazy a lot of their beats and rhymes really are.

Dessa definitely does spoken word. Rap is not a low beat with poetry being spoken over it.

RE: #NoKings Tour
Rap: The act of speaking over a beat, to the rhythm of the beat, with a tone of voice that complements the beat being used. Not a genre of music in itself.

Hip Hop: A genre of music in which the act of rapping is employed. It's been broken down into several different categories much in the same way metal has.

Spoken word: A poetic rant about social issues and/or personal struggles (beat optional).
