RE: Whoo-hoo!! Tigers sign Prince Fielder!!
According to 2 different sites Paul Molitor never played here and while I might not be as passionate about other sports as I am the NFL, I'm pretty sure I would remember a player of his caliber being here. So that led me to believe there was another Molitor that played for us so I Wiki'd the Tigers rosters from Cecils tenure here (1990-96) and found no record of any Molitors being on the Tigers. The official word on that pic is it's unexplainable.

Who is gonna challenge them?
An aging White Sox who just lost their best pitcher, closer and damn near the best manager in the team's history?
The Indians who only have a SS and a Catcher going for them?
Twins with one of the worst bullpens in baseball?
The Royals??

I completely agree. They got a young shitty defensive power bat who will be a fulltime DH within 5 years because of weight problems and/or how much of a defensive liability will be.

RE: Whoo-hoo!! Tigers sign Prince Fielder!!
Prince Fielder IS NOT even close to worth that kind of money. I don't know all the specifics but I hope to fuck that Detroit has an out clause in that mother fucker. If not, it puts them back even longer. I can honestly play first base in the big leagues. I could, 100% be a better defensive player than Fielder and I havent played baseball in about 5 years.
Add Cabrera at 3rd who will be awful, Peralta at SS who is one of the worst fielding SS in the league and I don't care if they have Joe Morgan at 2nd, that infield will account for dozens upon dozens of errors and runs allowed in.

RE: Whoo-hoo!! Tigers sign Prince Fielder!!
There is really nobody in the division who can compete with them and none of them have made any strong improvement throughout the off-season.
The Indians MAY present a problem early but everyone knows how that story goes.

RE: Whoo-hoo!! Tigers sign Prince Fielder!!
You guys worry too much, we'll be fine
Seriously, I have no idea how this "sets us back". Dude is a 27 year old left handed power hitter. I don't worry too much about defense when you play first base as it's not that difficult (not that you guys don't know this). I envision Prince getting 2/3 of time at first base and 1/3 at DH. I envision Miggy getting 1/3 time at third base, 1/3 at first base at 1/3 at DH.
This is a nice problem to have as we already have the best starting pitcher in baseball, followed by a really good #2 (Fister), followed by decent #3 & #4s, (Porcello & Scherzer) followed by a potential young stud (Jacob Turner). We also sport a solid bullpen, headlined by a guy that went 52-52 in save opportunities (including playoffs). Did I mention the vast majority of these players are gonna be here for awhile?
Bottom line: I'd bet the farm that Fielder delivers but if he doesn't.....will eating the contract suck? Fuck yea it will!! But it won't keep us from fielding a competitive team, the Tigers have signed several shit contracts since 2006 and still remained relevant.

RE: Whoo-hoo!! Tigers sign Prince Fielder!!
My question is this: With 65 million dollars tied up in three players (Fielder, Cabrera, Verlander) per year, how are they going to afford to keep guys like Fister, Porcello, Scherzer, and a bunch of their other key guys around?
Plus what are they going to do when Fielder finally does get a key injury? You know it's going to happen, it's inevitable. I just think it's a tough contract to try and get out from under... If this was a 4 year contract, I wouldn't be saying it's a bad deal. But for 9 years and a guy who can't field well and is already facing weight problems at 27, I just think it's a bad contract.

RE: Whoo-hoo!! Tigers sign Prince Fielder!!
A) Fister is not a decent #2
B) Ilitch won't sign another big name
C) Fielder will be "average" in about 4 years max
D) I hope I'm wrong

Fair enough Phenom.
Opti- I'm not gonna sit here and claim I know a whole hell of a lot about Doug Fister but last year that dude was a bonafide stud, can he do it again? We'll see. As for Ilitch, if this team succeeds then he'll spend money, maybe not to the tune of $214 million but the man has shown when he believes he opens up that wallet. I could be wrong but I'm thinking everythings gravy, again, we shall see soon.

They will be fine for the next year or 2 but the Indians are safer in terms of better youth and development.

Twins are unfortunately in an apparent full on rebuild it feels like. Hopefully Morneau can shake off his concussion symptoms finally this year.

In the AL East?
I don't think so. Those guys certainly don't put them ahead of NY, Boston and Tampa Bay. In any other division they'd have a better shot. Their only hope of ever contending is if they court Votto in 2 years.

Red Sox are going backwards, fuck them.
Yankees win this division by over 15 games this year.
Rays have the best pitching staff in all of baseball, saying that, they won't hit 100 HR as a team this year
Jays are improving a little each year, keeping their young guys and adding key pieces here and there. I like what they're doing honestly
