That's a good point, didn't think of that. Maybe they thought he'd take it to the house and totally redeem himself!

To be fair, he did run back a kick-off or punt-return nearly 40 yards after the first muff.

well like I said in my 2nd comment, I understand they believe they have the opportunity to get better field position for a game winning drive, its just silly to me to return a kick in OT if you dont have to, i dunno.

Kick Returners are just like Kickers. If they put points on the board, they are heroes. If they miss a FG/fumble the ball they're the worst thing to ever happen to that football team. It sucks that teams get themselves in a position that either of those are the only thing they can depend on to win the game. As if it's their fault the offense can't score the winning TD or something.
